The Worst Games of the Year 2025, Per Metacritic

At every turn, enthusiasts are quick to share their rankings of the best releases of 2025. However, what of the flops, the failures? Let's take a momentary detour to honor the most panned games of the year, based on review aggregator Metacritic. Are all of these games as disappointing as the ratings suggest? Here is the list.

10. Welcome Tour for Switch 2

Aggregate Score: 54/100, Audience Score: 3.4/10

The early response to this tech demo were heavily influenced by its $9.99 price tag, with many expressing disappointment it wasn't a free pack-in like similar console launches. Reviewer sentiment was quite mixed, from scathing critiques to somewhat forgiving appraisals that praised the delightful software underneath the controversy. Regardless of the grumbling, the title proved to be a notable seller during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Aggregate Score: 53/100, User Score: 3.2/10

Marketed as "beyond a racing game," this vroom-vroom title from European developers was met with overwhelmingly poor reviews. The consensus was that the game fell short in nearly every way, notably in a year filled with excellent racing titles. Ultimately, this underwhelming entry was better off left unplayed.

8. The Purrfect Bubsy Collection

Metascore: 53/100, User Score: 8.6/10

To begin with: the irritating punctuation is a notable strike against it. This compilation of 1990s-era platforming games showcases a "attitude"-filled feline known for constant jokes. Reviewers noted that these games haven't aged well in their time and have not improved with age. The surprisingly strong user score remains a peculiar anomaly to the Metascore.

7. Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game

Aggregate Score: 53, Audience Score: 3.5

This *Hunter x Hunter* brawler was met with widespread disappointment from both critics and fans. Issues included a small character selection and a minimal offering of content. User reviews was especially harsh, with some stating a wish that the title's flop would have consequences for similar releases.

6. Neptunia Motorcycle Game

Metascore: 51, Audience Score: 5.3

Based on the anime-style Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this motorcycle action game tasks players with gathering cute monsters. Critics argued that its goal to channel a rolling-collection feel didn't land, coming across as more of a cash grab than a worthy addition to the franchise. Its 3-hour duration combined with a full retail cost raised eyebrows.

5. Captain Blood

Metascore: 50, User Score: 5.3

This title is a piece of lost media from the Xbox era, seeing the light of day after years and years in development hell. The publishers made the decision to keep the game as an original experience of its time, acknowledging that modern gamers might not appreciate its dated design. As such, many reviews concluded that the interesting history of its journey was far richer than the actual gameplay.

4. Scar-Lead Salvation

Metascore: 44, Audience Score: 2.4

This anime-art action game inspired by games like *Returnal* fell flat with critics. Frequent criticisms were uninspired foes, repetitive levels, and a unengaging plot. A controversial mechanic involving the protagonist's clothing was seen as adding nothing and undermined the game's enjoyment.

3. Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator

Metascore: 44, User Score: 4.9

Think of the tense surgery games of the past, then remove the compelling story. That, according to reviews, is pretty much *Ambulance Life*. Reviewers found the ambulance-driving sequences to be monotonous, and the story's portrayal of mental health topics was criticized as being poorly executed. The overall experience was deemed largely unsatisfying.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Aggregate Score: 43, User Score: 5.8

This departure from the classic virtual pet formula makes the franchise into a minigame collection title. The result, based on critics, was a vapid collection of simple minigames that very soon grew tiresome. Some reviews went so far as to label it one of the most disappointing titles available on its platform, pointing to a dearth of satisfying gameplay.

1. MindsEye

Metascore: 37, Audience Score: 2.5

Positioned as a major crime saga from a team featuring experienced developers, *MindsEye* was a notable disappointment. Reviews universally panned its lousy combat, dull missions, and a host of game-breaking glitches. Several found it to be a downgrade compared to decades-old games in the same genre. Among the sea of negativity, a few of positive user reviews found something to enjoy in the experience, serving as a lonely counterpoint.
